Pencil Drawings of People
Will Smith Towers
In Caricature Genre

Pencil Drawings of People Will Smith, in this case, can become caricatures.

As Will Smith is an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated actor, Grammy Award winning musician, married to actress Jada Pinkett Smith, and box office magnet, he has a high profile in the media.

Standing tall at 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 centimeters), the project of caricaturing Will Smith might include his height, stature in Hollywood, box office appeal.

All this to solve the problem of how to have my perspective show up in the finished drawing. As an artist, my job is to try to add something new to each interpretation. Some caricatures are more challenging to solve than others.

Will Smith is one in a series of pencil drawings of people who are famous.

Caricaturing a celebrity, or anyone else, is about over-emphasizing certain features and under-emphasizing others. It is not meant to be mean. Caricature of celebrities provides a lighter view of the person.

Celebrity caricature can be distinctly different from editorial caricatures.

Notice in the caricature here, I have selected to over-emphasize his ears and hair. Doing so allows me to under-emphasize the balance of the face and let the handsome features remain.

Most often, editorial caricatures are created for an ironic or satiric effect that reflects the point of view of the newspaper, blog, magazine, or other media.

You can practice by finding a clear photograph of a favorite celebrity or sports figure. Try tracing the figure by overlaying tracing paper.

As you trace, notice how basic shapes form features like ears, lips, eyes.

Another solution is to invest in a light tracer box.
They come in different styles and prices to meet most budgets. You will use a light tracer box for years to come in drawing, sketching and painting.
