Pencil Drawings of People Karl Rove Rushes from White House to Political Analysis
Pencil drawings of people Karl Rove was Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff to former President George W. Bush.
Since resigning his position, he has worked as a political analyst and contributor to Fox News, Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal.
If I were illustrating an editorial caricature the image could have taken on an ironic or satiric tone.
Instead, I chose to render the exaggeration of a caricature without turning it into a gag cartoon.
In photographs Rove's head dominates his appearance. A receding hairline coupled with the fine texture of the hair emphasizes an already high forehead. His Scandanavian heritage is evident in fair hair and skin. The skin gives off a patina and reflects an all around smoothness in many photographs.
We can also see the roundness and softness of Rove's features in photographs and video. Looking at photographs there is a slight squint to his left eye.
Each of these features can be exaggerated or under-emphasized in a caricature.
Using a tracer light box or an opaque projector to practice a caricature can accelerate the learning curve of an artist.
By practicing on an existing illustration already created by hand, the quirks and broad interpretation of the subject become more apparent.
In my illustration of Rove, I have chosen to exaggerate his rushing from one high-level meeting to another by allowing wispy hair to ruffle. And he is carrying a portfolio jammed with important looking folders and documents.
The roundness and softness of his features are emphasized as well as the left eye.
